A fascinating and complex white from the meticulous Abel Mendoza & Maite Fernández estate in San Vicente de la Sonsierra in Rioja Alta. The name “5V” refers to the five indigenous white grape varieties that make up the blend, each contributing different layers of aroma, structure and freshness. Each variety is harvested by hand and fermented in new French oak barrels, with around five months ageing on the lees with bâtonnage, giving the wine its layered texture and complexity. The nose is highly expressive, showing white peach, lemon peel, lychee and fresh herbs, with subtle smoky and spicy notes from oak ageing. On the palate the wine is textured and structured, combining vibrant citrus acidity with orchard fruit, mineral tension and a creamy mid-palate before a long, refined finish.
