Bastiàn Cuntràri Valtellina Superiore Sassella Nebbiolo - Sassella DOCG, Lombardia, Italy
A striking, terroir-driven Nebbiolo from the steep, sun-baked terraces of the Sassella cru, this wine represents a step up in structure and intensity from the estate’s Rosso di Valtellina. Produced by the small, sustainability-focused Bastiàn Cuntràri project, it captures the raw, alpine character that makes Valtellina so distinctive.
Founded by two young winemakers driven by a passion for their land, Bastiàn Cuntràri focuses on organic principles, minimal intervention and careful parcel selection, producing small-production wines that emphasize purity and place.
Sassella is one of Valtellina’s most historic and dramatic subzones, defined by steep, rocky terraces and intense sun exposure, with cooling alpine breezes preserving freshness. The name itself refers to the rocky (“sasso”) terrain, which contributes to the wine’s mineral backbone, structure and ageing potential.
Compared to Piedmont Nebbiolo, Sassella wines tend to be more linear and mineral, slightly lighter in body but high in acidity and tension and notably marked by floral aromatics and alpine freshness.
The nose is perfumed and precise, with notes of red cherry, rose petal and orange peel, layered with hints of alpine herbs, spice and crushed stone. On the palate it is finely etched and energetic - brisk acidity and silky tannins frame a core of vibrant red fruit, savoury nuance and pronounced mineral tension, leading to a long, lifted finish.
Grape variety: 100% Nebbiolo (Chiavennasca)
Style: Dry red, medium-bodied alpine Nebbiolo (DOCG)
Drink window: 2025–2035
Perfect for: Braised beef, lamb, game, mushroom dishes, alpine cheeses
Perfumed, mineral and beautifully precise - a quintessential Sassella that captures the energy and elegance of mountain Nebbiolo.
