Clos Henri Waimaunga Pinot Noir Single Vineyard - Marlborough, New Zealand
A striking single-vineyard Pinot Noir from Clos Henri, the organically farmed Marlborough estate established by the Bourgeois family of Sancerre. The Waimaunga vineyard is named after the ancient Waimaungan glaciation period, which helped shape the distinctive clay soils that give this wine its depth and character.
Hand-harvested fruit undergoes gentle extraction with a portion of whole-cluster fermentation before ageing for about 12 months in French oak barrels, giving the wine structure and subtle spice while preserving its bright fruit character.
The wine opens with lifted aromas of red cherry, raspberry and wild strawberry layered with violet, subtle spice and earthy undertones. On the palate it’s medium-bodied yet concentrated, showing vibrant red-fruit purity supported by silky tannins and lively acidity. The clay-rich soils add structure and mineral depth, leading to a long, savoury finish with hints of mushroom and gentle spice.
Fun observation - the bottle has an old-school cork enclosure - an almost extreme rarity these days in NZ winemaking!
