Château Cos d’Estournel ‘Pagodes de Cos’ Rouge 2020 / Saint-Estèphe, Bordeaux, France

Polished, seductive and unmistakably Cos in spirit, ‘Pagodes de Cos’ 2020 is a superb second wine from one of Saint-Estèphe’s most iconic estates. It opens with blackcurrant, blackberry and dark cherry, layered with violet, graphite, tobacco leaf, spice and a subtle tea-like savoury note. The palate is medium to full-bodied, smooth and finely structured, with ripe tannins, fresh acidity and a dark-fruited core that feels generous without losing its Left Bank precision. There’s real elegance here: the wine is plush enough to enjoy earlier than the Grand Vin, but still carries the mineral depth, polish and quiet power that make Cos d’Estournel so distinctive.

Made from 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot, the 2020 comes from dedicated Pagodes de Cos parcels with vines averaging around 40 years old. It was aged in French oak barrels, with around 30% new oak, giving the wine spice and structure without overwhelming its freshness. The result is a balanced, voluptuous Saint-Estèphe that offers a highly polished introduction to the Cos style while remaining very much a serious Bordeaux in its own right.

Critic Scores:

94 points - Jeb Dunnuck
92-94 points - Wine Cellar Insider
89 points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (91-93 en primeur barrel score)

A beautifully judged second wine from a great estate - dark, refined and quietly luxurious, with enough polish for near-term drinking and enough Saint-Estèphe backbone to age gracefully.
