Domaine Saint Gayan 'Origine' Gigondas - Gigondas AOC, Rhône Valley, France
Powerful, complex and built for the cellar, Origine is the flagship Gigondas of Domaine Saint Gayan and a superb expression of one of the Southern Rhône's greatest appellations. Intense aromas of blackberry, black cherry and ripe plum are layered with cracked black pepper, licorice, lavender, wild thyme and hints of cocoa and smoked earth. The palate is full-bodied and beautifully structured, combining concentrated dark fruit with finely knit tannins, vibrant freshness and a deep mineral core. Youthfully reserved in its early years, it gradually unfolds into a wine of remarkable elegance and complexity, finishing long with savoury spice, garrigue herbs and crushed stone.
Produced from organically-tended old vines averaging 45 years of age, Origine is a classic blend of 80% Grenache, 15% Syrah and 5% Mourvèdre, grown on the stony clay-limestone soils surrounding the estate in Gigondas. The grapes are harvested entirely by hand before undergoing a traditional, long maceration with destemmed fruit. The wine is then matured in a combination of 60% demi-muids and small foudres and 40% concrete tanks, preserving both the generosity of the fruit and the purity of the terroir. Domaine Saint Gayan has long been regarded as one of Gigondas' benchmark estates, with generations of careful vineyard stewardship producing wines renowned for their balance, longevity and unmistakable sense of place.
