Dugat-Py Monthélie Très Vieilles Vignes 2023 - Burgundy, France
Producer's Notes:
These very old Pinot Noir vines grow on gravelly limestone soils covered with red clay and marl. Monthelie Très Vieilles Vignes from Domaine Dugat-Py is a wine with a velvety texture and fine tannins.
What we say:
A deeply serious and rare village Burgundy from Domaine Dugat-Py, this Très Vieilles Vignes bottling represents an even more extreme selection of old vines than the domaine’s already concentrated “Vieilles Vignes” cuvées. Sourced from parcels of exceptionally old Pinot Noir vines, often several decades old (and sometimes far older), this wine pushes Monthélie into truly fine-wine territory.
Monthélie is often overlooked compared to its neighbours (Volnay, Meursault), but in the hands of producers like Dugat-Py - especially with very old vines - it can deliver serious structure, aromatic complexity and long ageing potential.
At Dugat-Py, Très Vieilles Vignes is not just a label - it indicates exceptionally old vine material, producing tiny yields and highly concentrated berries, resulting in wines with greater structure, depth and ageing potential than standard cuvées. The domaine’s vineyards average around 70 years of age, with some parcels dating back much further.
Despite a warm growing season, the 2023 vintage at Dugat-Py is noted for its surprising freshness and purity, with careful vineyard work and strict yield control preserving balance and terroir expression.
The 2023 opens with intense aromatics of black cherry, raspberry and wild strawberry, layered with earth, spice, smoke and a subtle floral lift. On the palate it is medium-to-full-bodied with remarkable density and structure for the appellation - ripe, concentrated fruit sits alongside firm, finely grained tannins and vibrant acidity, giving both power and precision. A pronounced mineral backbone carries through to a long, savoury finish that reflects both the terroir and the old-vine depth.
