Luis Seabra ‘Xisto Ilimitado’ White Blend - Douro Superior (Meda), Portugal
Tense, mineral and quietly complex, ‘Xisto Ilimitado’ White captures the Douro’s high-altitude freshness and schist-driven character in a beautifully restrained style. It opens with lemon peel, green apple and pear, layered with white flowers, fennel, almond and a subtle smoky, stony edge. Somewhat reminiscent of fine white Burgundy, the palate is dry, precise and textural, with bright acidity, a gently waxy mid-palate and a long, saline finish that feels more about stone and structure than overt fruit.
Made from a traditional Douro field blend - typically including Rabigato, Códega, Gouveio, Viosinho and Arinto (depending on the vintage) sourced from old vines planted on schist soils at elevation. Fermentation is carried out with indigenous yeasts, with ageing in used French oak and stainless steel to build texture without obvious oak flavour. Like the red, the name “Xisto Ilimitado” (“unlimited schist”) reflects Seabra’s focus on expressing the Douro’s mineral backbone with clarity and precision.
Grape Variety: Traditional Douro white field blend (Rabigato (70%), Gouveio (20%), Arinto (5%) and Códega (5%))
Style: White – Dry, medium-bodied, mineral-driven
Drink Window: Now – 6–8 years
Perfect For: Grilled fish, roast chicken, shellfish, salted cod, creamy cheeses
A serious, stone-cut Douro white - fresh, savoury and quietly powerful, with the texture and tension to surprise anyone who thinks the Douro is only about reds.
