Luis Seabra ‘Xisto Ilimitado’ Red Blend - Ervedosa do Douro and Cotas do Douro, Portugal
Fresh, mineral and beautifully restrained, ‘Xisto Ilimitado’ shows the Douro from a very different angle: less about power and extraction, more about altitude, schist and precision. It opens with bright red and black fruit, including pomegranate, cherry, blackberry and wild plum, which is layered with violet, white pepper, dried herbs, graphite and a subtle smoky, wet stone edge. The palate is medium-bodied and finely structured, with vibrant acidity and firm but polished tannins giving shape and tension. There’s plenty of Douro depth here, but it’s carried with lift and elegance rather than weight.
Made from a field blend of traditional Douro varieties, often including Touriga Franca, Alicante Bouschet, Rufete and others (depending on vintage), sourced from high-altitude vineyards planted on schist soils. Fermentation is carried out with indigenous yeasts, and ageing takes place in used French oak and larger neutral vessels to preserve freshness and site expression. The name “Xisto Ilimitado” roughly translates as “unlimited schist,” a nod to the region’s defining soils and Seabra’s goal of expressing the Douro with clarity and restraint. If you're a fan of "village"-level Burgundy, Xisto Ilimitado will suit your palate perfectly.
