Madai 'Origen' Godello - Bierzo, Spain
Alongside Albariño, Godello is another white grape from northern Spain that has been gaining international recognition in recent years. This has attractive aromas of fruit salad, appetizing juicy fruit and a mouthwatering, dry finish.
Hidden among the plots on steep, south-facing slopes were ancient Mencía and Godello vines - some over 100 years old. Produced by Bodegas Madai, this medium-bodied Spanish white wine with a pale straw hue from the Bierzo region features fresh aromas of green apple and peach, accompanied by herbal and floral hints. The palate balances ripe stone fruits with bright acidity, a distinct mineral texture, and a savory, citrus-tinged finish. While the Madai estate boasts these rare century-old vines, the grapes for the Origen come from the estate's younger plots, which are still an impressive 20+ years old. This wine balances fruit vibrancy with the salty, stony tension typical of great northwestern Spanish whites. Hugely enjoyable and moreish!
