Mas de Daumas Gassac White 2022 - IGP Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert, Languedoc, France
Singular, layered and quietly legendary, Mas de Daumas Gassac White is one of the great outliers of southern France: a white blend with the texture, complexity and ageing potential of a serious cellar wine. The 2022 opens with ripe stone fruit, citrus peel and orchard blossom, layered with notes of honey, almond, fresh herbs and a distinctive mineral edge. The palate is rich but beautifully balanced, with generous fruit and a lightly waxy texture held in check by freshness and a long, savoury finish. The estate recommends enjoying it young for its vivid fruit and minerality, or cellaring it for several years to let honeyed and candied-fruit notes emerge.
Made from a famously unusual (and rare) blend that centres on Viognier, Petit Manseng, Chardonnay and Chenin Blanc, with smaller portions of varieties such as Marsanne, Roussanne, Petit Courbu, Muscat, Gros Manseng, Sémillon and Fiano depending on the vintage, this is not a standard Languedoc white by any measure. The estate’s white wines are known for slow, cool fermentations and a careful, minimal-sulphur approach, creating wines that are aromatic in youth but capable of developing impressive richness and complexity with age.
Grape Variety: Viognier, Petit Manseng, Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, plus rare white varieties
Style: White – Dry, medium to full-bodied, textural, age-worthy
Drink Window: Now – 2034+
Perfect For: Oysters, scallops, grilled fish, roast poultry, foie gras, contemplative sipping
A true cult white from the Languedoc - rich, mineral and endlessly intriguing, with the kind of personality that makes it feel less like a regional curiosity and more like a category of its own.
