Masi Campolongo di Torbe Amarone Classico 2013 - Valpolicella Classico DOCG, Veneto, Italy
A beautifully concentrated Amarone from one of the most revered single-vineyard sites in Valpolicella Classico. The 2013 Campolongo di Torbe opens with deep, inviting aromas of baked black cherry, plum preserves, kirsch and spice, framed by hints of tobacco leaf, crushed clove and dark chocolate. On the palate it’s rich and powerful yet wonderfully balanced for its intensity, with succulent dried fruit, fine tannins and bright acidity that carry through a long, layered finish. This wine reflects both the traditional appassimento raisining method and the unique terroir of the Campolongo di Torbe cru - giving real depth, structure and age-worthy potential.
At 16% ABV, this wine sits squarely within the classic range for Amarone. The naturally high alcohol is a result of the aforementioned appassimento method of winemaking, where grapes are air-dried before fermentation, concentrating sugars and flavours. When well made - as here - the alcohol is balanced by richness, structure and acidity, contributing to the wine’s warmth, depth and long, powerful finish rather than feeling heavy or harsh.
Grape varieties: Corvina Veronese, Rondinella, Molinara (classic Amarone blend)
Style: Dry red, full-bodied Amarone della Valpolicella Classico
Drink window: Now–2040+ (excellent long-term ageing potential)
Perfect for: Braised beef, game, roast lamb, rich stews, aged hard cheeses
Critic scores:
95 - Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate ("dense fruit with savoury nuance")
91 - Natalie MacLean ("rich and concentrated with spice and compote character")
95–97 - published multi-critic consensus (Wine Enthusiast/James Suckling/Wine Spectator/Robert Parker ranges)
Deep, rich and decadently structured - a classic Campolongo di Torbe Amarone that beautifully balances power and finesse.
