Maugeri Contrada Praino “Frontemare” Etna Bianco Superiore – Sicily, Italy
Producer's Notes:
Fresh and crunchy with sliced lemon, spiced pear and cooked apple with bright acidity. Medium body, with a solid and layered core of fruit. It’s bright yet deep with plenty of structure and fruit. Flinty and minerally at the end.
What we say:
From the volcanic slopes of Mount Etna (east side at ~700 m), Maugeri’s Frontemare is a single-vineyard expression of 100% Carricante grown on sandy-lava soils in Contrada Praino. The wine is harvested by hand, gently pressed and aged ~8 months in French oak tonneaux (70%) and stainless steel (30%).
On the nose: green apple, candied lime, ginger, and white-flower aromas with a distinct flinty volcanic edge. On the palate: vibrant acidity, lively citrus and orchard fruit, cool-toned texture, strong minerality, and a long, elegant finish.
Grape variety: Carricante
Style: Elevated volcanic white, Etna Bianco Superiore
Drink window: Now–2032+ (longer with good cellaring)
Perfect for: Sea-bass, grilled white fish, Sicilian shellfish, lemon-herb chicken, or a special white-wine moment
94 points - James Suckling
A crisp yet deeply textured Carricante from the volcano—pure sunshine in a bottle with serious polish.
