Penfolds RWT Bin 798 Barossa Valley Shiraz 2019 – Barossa Valley, South Australia
Producer's Notes:
Penfolds RWT Shiraz 2019 presents an admirable alternative to the multi-regional sourcing and American oak maturation that are hallmarks of Grange, expressing instead, single region Barossa Valley shiraz matured only in French oak. The initials RWT stand for ‘Red Winemaking Trial’, the name given to the project internally when developmental work began in 1995. Naturally, now no longer a ‘Trial’, RWT Shiraz was launched in May 2000 with the 1997 vintage. Its style is opulent and fleshy, contrasting with Grange, which is more muscular and assertive. Penfolds Bin 798 RWT 2019 is made from fruit primarily selected for its aromatic qualities and lush texture. The result is a wine that helps to redefine Barossa shiraz at the highest quality level.
Dark fruits affording viscosity and concentration. Quince noted … and a little more (fig/cheese + balsamic?). Vietnamese mint and anise indulge an admirable palate “cooling effect”/lift. Dusty tannins fused with cocoa chocolate dust.
Structurally confident - a defined backbone, Barossa weight and density.
What we say
From the iconic house of Penfolds, the RWT (Red Winemaking Trial) label represents an ultra-premium single-region Shiraz matured exclusively in French oak hogsheads. The 2019 vintage is widely regarded as a standout, combining ripe Barossa fruit with exceptional polish and complexity.
The bouquet opens with dense blackberry, dark cherry, plum and hints of liquorice, cedar, and spice-cake. The palate is full-bodied and richly textured - layered dark fruits, mocha, black pepper and graphite notes, framed by fine yet firm tannins and a long, elegant finish that lingers. This is Shiraz built for both impact now and serious ageing.
