Tenuta dell’Ornellaia Bolgheri Superiore 2002 - Bolgheri, Tuscany, Italy
The 2002 vintage of Ornellaia may not carry the weight or depth of the estate’s most lauded years, but it remains an impressive, balanced expression - often described as a “quiet over-achiever.” On the nose: dark red fruit (think plum and currant) layered with earthy herbs, tobacco, and a subtle Mediterranean marine edge - more restrained than flamboyant, but elegant. On the palate: supple dark-fruit character, softened tannins and a gently savoury finish; it offers approachable structure and harmony rather than power or overt intensity, with a pleasing balance that makes it easy to enjoy even now.
Grape Variety: ~ 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, ~ 30% Merlot, ~ 5% Petit Verdot
Style: Elegant Tuscan Bordeaux-style red - balanced, refined, coastal-influenced rather than opulent
Drink Window: Drinking well now - probably best enjoyed within 24 months of purchase
Perfect For: Roast beef or veal, grilled red meats, rich pasta dishes, mature cheeses, game dishes
Wine Advocate 92 points
A subtle, balanced Ornellaia - less about power or flamboyance, more about harmony, elegance and character. A good “drink-now” option from the cellar, offering a coastal-influenced Tuscan red that delivers quality and drinkability without demanding extensive ageing.
*Please be aware that with all vintage wines, the natural corks may crumble if using a regular corkscrew. Please use proper uncorking tools and exercise caution. Sediment will settle in the bottle over time therefore decanting prior to serving will remove this deposit. We're happy to advise - drop us a message or give us a call!
