Thunevin-Calvet Maury Vin Doux 1985 - Maury, Roussillon, France
Producer's notes:
The Domaine was born in 2001 from the meeting of two winegrowers: Jean-Luc Thunevin, owner of Château Valandraud in Saint-Emilion and Jean-Roger Calvet from Maury. “Vins Doux Naturels” date back from the 13th century. It is quite rare to stumble upon an old “vintage Maury” as this unique form of winemaking is usually made by blending the grapes of several vintages. Years of patience haven’t wrinkled this exceptional wine with its light brown caramel coat. The whole exudes harmony, finesse, and complexity.
Food and wine pairings: To drink as an aperitif or with blue-veined cheeses, blueberry tarts, black fig desserts, chocolate cakes. Serve at 14-15°C.
Aging: Drink now or age for up to 100 years.
What we say:
This 1985 bottling from Thunevin‑Calvet is a mature example of Maury AOC vin doux naturel - a fortified Grenache-based wine that’s had decades to evolve gracefully. With time, the wine’s deep sweetness and power have softened into a harmonious and complex expression, displaying the rancio-like character that makes old Maury wines so compelling.
On the nose, expect aromas of dried figs and prune, softened black cherries and compote, with alluring seared-toffee, walnut, cocoa and old leather - the kind of layered, oxidative bouquet that only decades of bottle age can deliver. On the palate, the wine is rich and plush, showing mature dark fruit, stewed berry, dried fruit and a hint of raisin; these evolve into warm notes of coffee, cocoa, nuts and a gentle spice, all carried by a smooth texture, soft tannins and a lingering, slightly nutty finish.
Grape variety: 100% Grenache Noir (fortified)
Style: Mature vin doux naturel - sweet, oxidative, richly evolved
Drink window: Drink now - this wine is drinking beautifully after 40+ years; will remain rewarding for many years or even decades.
Perfect for: Blue-veined or mature cheeses, walnut or fig-based desserts, dark-chocolate cakes, dried fruit tarts, or as a contemplative after-dinner sipper.
A rare and refined fortified sweet from Maury - this 1985 Thunevin-Calvet is a mature, complex VDN where Grenache richness meets decades of oxidative evolution, delivering depth, warmth and soft, rancio charm.
