Varietal Note: The lesser-seen Gaglioppo is a red wine grape variety indigenous to Calabria, Italy - known for producing full-bodied, high-tannin wines, often with notes of cherry, spice, and violet.
What we say:
A true expression of Calabria’s indigenous Gaglioppo grape, crafted by one of the region’s most respected organic growers. Cataldo Calabretta farms his vineyards without chemicals and vinifies with a light touch, aiming to preserve the purity and rustic elegance of Cirò’s coastal hills.
The wine opens with aromas of red cherry, pomegranate, dried herbs and a hint of dusty earth. On the palate it’s bright and savoury, with fine, lightly grippy tannins, lively acidity and a subtle mineral backbone. Fresh, transparent and quietly complex, this is a beautiful example of old-vine Southern Italian winemaking with real authenticity.
