Claire & Florent Bejon ‘Saint Germain’ - Loire Valley, France
Producer's Notes:
A blend of four tiny parcels of old vines of Cabernet Franc, which total less than a hectare and are planted over a combination of sand and limestone. The grapes infused as whole bunches for six weeks before being pressed to old demi-muids and amphorae for a year of rest. Reflecting the vintage, this is heady with brambly fruit, earth and pepper, and is awash with the kind of cleansing acidity that keeps us coming back for more. No CO2 is added at any point.
What we say:
A step up in depth and structure, ‘Saint Germain’ shows a darker, more brooding side of Cabernet Franc, with black cherry, plum and crushed blackberry layered over graphite, dried herbs and a gently savoury, earthy core. The palate has more grip and concentration than the domaine’s lighter cuvées, with fine but present tannins framing the fruit, while a streak of freshness keeps everything poised and energetic. There’s a lovely balance between ripeness and restraint, finishing long with a mineral edge and a whisper of spice.

A more serious, cellar-worthy expression from Bejon - thoughtful, layered and built to reward a little patience.
