Gian Luca Colombo Barbera d’Alba Superiore – Piedmont, Italy

Producer's notes:

A local historical grape, snubbed by most, reveals its intrigue only to those who listen to it and try to understand. It is without a doubt the variety that I have the most kinship with.

Maceration for 22 to 40 days with controlled temperatures. 100% in big Austrian barrels sometimes aged in terracotta. Bottling after approximately 12-14 months.

What we say:

From the now-cult winemaker Gian Luca Colombo in the Langhe, this low-intervention Barbera d’Alba Superiore offers depth, freshness and structure - delivered with the same elegance that defines his more premium Nebbiolo wines. Sourced from hillside vineyards and treated with care, it’s a powerful yet refined expression of Barbera.

On the nose you’ll find intense aromas of dark cherry, plum, raspberry, and warm spice with hints of tobacco and cedar from gentle oak influence. On the palate, the wine is medium-to-full bodied with lively acidity (typical Barbera lift), firm but smooth tannins, and a core of juicy dark fruit balanced by minerality and a long savoury finish. It strikes a wonderful balance between richness and drink-now appeal.
