Judith Beck Blaufränkisch - Neusiedl am See, Burgenland, Austria
Producer's Notes:
Deep dark cherry red in colour with a vibrant violet rim, this wine opens with an expressive bouquet of dark wild berries, ripe blackberries, sour cherries, and delicate sweet spices. On the palate, it is juicy and medium-bodied, showcasing an elegant structure supported by fine, velvety tannins and a smooth, supple texture. A crisp, refreshing acidity brings balance and energy, leading to a lingering finish layered with spicy notes and vibrant dark fruit character.
What we say:
Bright, vibrant and unmistakably Austrian, Judith Beck’s Blaufränkisch is a beautifully pure expression of Burgenland’s signature red grape. It opens with sour cherry, blackberry and wild blueberry, layered with violet, cracked pepper, dried herbs and a subtle earthy-mineral note. The palate is medium-bodied and energetic, with juicy dark fruit, lively acidity and fine, chalky tannins that give the wine structure without weight. There’s a wonderful freshness running throughout, finishing savoury, spicy and remarkably moreish.
Farmed organically and biodynamically around Gols on the eastern shores of Lake Neusiedl, the fruit is hand-harvested and fermented with indigenous yeasts using a low-intervention approach. Judith Beck favours gentle extraction and ageing in older oak and large neutral vessels, allowing Blaufränkisch’s naturally vibrant fruit, peppery spice and mineral character to take centre stage. The result is a wine that feels authentic, transparent and deeply connected to its place.
