Koehler-Ruprecht Kallstadter Saumagen Riesling Auslese Trocken – Pfalz, Germany

A powerful, deeply expressive dry Riesling from one of Germany’s most traditional and uncompromising estates, this Auslese Trocken from the famed Saumagen vineyard shows why Koehler-Ruprecht is so revered. Sourced from old vines rooted in chalky marl and limestone, it combines intensity and finesse in a style that is unmistakably Saumagen: dense, mineral, and built to age.

The nose is striking and complex, offering ripe citrus, yellow peach, quince, and crushed stone with subtle notes of spice and dried herbs. On the palate, it is concentrated and structured - fuller-bodied for Riesling, with gripping acidity, layers of fruit and minerality, and a long, resonant finish that shows both power and precision. This is dry Riesling of real presence, capable of evolving beautifully in the cellar.

Grape variety: Riesling

Style: Intense, mineral, age-worthy dry Riesling

Profound, structured, and unmistakably Pfalz - Koehler-Ruprecht’s Kallstadter Saumagen Auslese Trocken is a benchmark dry Riesling from one of Germany’s great vineyards.

Additional notes from the Australian importer:

The Saumagen vineyard is one of the most celebrated sites of the Pfalz region. It has calcareous soils on a south-facing slope and delivers wines with especially high minerality and ageing potential. The grapes are harvested with up to five selective pickings by hand. They're crushed and then macerated between 12 to 24 hours before undergoing spontaneous fermentation. The wines are aged in traditional oval-shaped oak or chestnut barrels ranging from 300 to 2400 litres, with up to nine months on the lees . They are lightly filtered and bottled just before next harvest.
