Lock & Worth Merlot - Naramata Bench, B.C., Canada
Producer's Notes:
This is NOT what you may have come to expect from Okanagan Merlot. Light to medium in body, we do not try to make a big or heavy wine here. Despite the fact that this single vineyard produces amazing and serious fruit that could handle extended time in barrel, we feel the wine should highlight the inherent fruit qualities and not oak or heavy extraction. Bright, light ruby. Sweet red plums, savory herbs, fine tannins, and refreshing acidity. Medium-bodied, supple and driven. This wine is unfined and unfiltered, and slightly hazy.
What We Say:
A wonderful counterpoint to the richer, heavier style often associated with Okanagan Merlot. It is light to medium-bodied, bright, savory, and energetic, with a firm emphasis on vineyard character, freshness, and fruit rather than oak or weight. The palate is bright, crunchy and juicy, with lively acidity carrying the red-plum and cherry fruit.
The grapes are destemmed by hand rather than aggressively crushed, and then undergo about five days of skin contact during fermentation. After basket pressing, the wine ferments and ages in neutral/older French oak, rather than new barrels, for about seven months.
One of the most appealing characteristics is that it can actually benefit from a slight chill—unusual for many Merlots, but perfectly suited to this wine's vibrant, low-alcohol, fresh style.
