Peter Lauer “No. 6 Senior” Ayler Riesling – Saar, Germany
Producer's Notes:
Grandfather Peter Lauer I (1906–1991) used to enjoy a bottle of Riesling every day. It smelled wonderful, tasted dry, but finely balanced with a hint of fruit on the palate. Every year, he chose a cask from Ayler Kupp. He placed particular emphasis on a single wine for all his guests, which appealed to both the dry wine drinker and the lover of fruity wines. As a tribute to this famous “Senior” wine, we vinify a worthy successor every year that grandfather would like to taste.
What we say:
From the vines of Ayler Kupp and crafted by Peter Lauer, the No. 6 Senior is a delicate, finely-balanced Riesling bottling that walks the line between dry and off-dry - a style known in Germany as feinherb. The wine comes from steep slate slopes in the Saar valley, where cool climate, low yields and mineral soils give precision and energy.
The nose opens with crisp aromas of green apple, lime zest, white flowers and crushed slate. On the palate, it delivers light-to-medium body with graceful acidity, gently textured fruit (think pear, lemon, a touch of orchard blossom) and a salty, stony mineral finish. The residual sweetness is subtle enough to add texture without softness - this is Riesling with focus, purity and vibrancy.
Grape variety: Riesling
Style: Elegant feinherb (off-dry) Saar Riesling with light body and striking mineral character
Drink window: Now–2030
Perfect for: Spiced Asian dishes, fresh seafood, salads with citrus dressings, soft cheeses, or sipping if you want something refined and fresh with a hint of sweetness
A poised Saar Riesling that captures the beauty of “feinherb” in a glass — light, mineral and utterly compelling.
