Philip Lardot “Schiefer” Riesling - Mosel, Germany
Producer's Notes:
Schiefer “Slate” is a blend of Riesling from multiple sites. Here we combine fruit that is farmed by our close friend, Michael, the only grower we purchase fruit from, along with selections from our own vineyards. The vines are 30-40 years old and grafted in all sites. All sites are pure grey and blue slate.
Cold macerated for a few hours before pressing, fermentation in barrel on full lees, 14 months of ageing in tonneau.
What we say:
A taut, mineral-driven Riesling that reflects both the steep slate slopes of the Mosel and Philip Lardot’s precision-focused, low-intervention winemaking, Schiefer (“Slate”) is one of the most transparent expressions of terroir in his lineup. It’s a wine that feels chiselled and energetic, built on purity rather than adornment.
The nose is bright and focused, with aromas of lime zest, green apple, white peach, and crushed slate, accented by subtle herbal and floral tones. On the palate, Schiefer is racy and incisive - light to medium-bodied with electric acidity, a lean, stony core, and a long, dry finish that hums with mineral tension. It’s remarkably refreshing while still offering impressive depth.
