Pizzo Coca Inferno Valtellina Superiore Nebbiolo — Inferno DOCG, Lombardia, Italy
A striking, high-altitude Nebbiolo from the dramatic terraced vineyards of the Inferno cru in Valtellina - one of the region’s most intense and sun-exposed sites. Produced by the small, low-intervention Pizzo Coca estate, this wine captures the wild, alpine character of the area.
Hand-harvested fruit from old vines undergoes long maceration (around 30+ days) and ageing in neutral oak, with minimal intervention, low sulphur and no fining or filtration — preserving purity and terroir expression. The medium-term cellar potential is evident too - you could easily lay this one down for a few years and it would make a unique addition to any cellar collection.
Aromas of rose petal, cranberry and red cherry are layered with notes of menthol, spice and leather, while the palate is medium-bodied yet deeply structured, with vibrant acidity and fine, grippy tannins carrying savoury red-fruit flavours through a long, mineral finish.
The steep, terraced vineyards - composed of schist and sandstone soils - and the intense late-day sun exposure (which gives the cru its name, “Inferno”) contribute to the wine’s concentration, tension and unmistakable sense of place.
